Rod Calcagno
Singer, guitarist, martial artist, and teacher. Born in Caracas, raised in the mountains of Miranda, and based in Brasília. Music and movement. Art and discipline.

My Story
Rod Calcagno was born on July 6, 1989, in Caracas, the son of an auto mechanic and a reporter, and grew up in the mountains of Miranda, among animals, plants, and the easy bohemia of home. Music there was not a trade. It was the air. Salsa, boleros, Venezuelan folk, and rock played all day, sung and shared with his sister. Hearing his mother sing and picking up the guitar lit something that never went out.
He began Kung Fu at seven. The art gave him what he would later bring to everything else: stillness, discipline, and presence. At eleven his parents gave him a classical guitar, and play became craft. He started on his own with a basic method, then at twelve began studying at the David Fory music academy. He spent years studying Metallica's repertoire and playing in school bands, until, at fourteen, he found a record that changed his ear: Dream Theater’s Scenes from a Memory. Petrucci’s clean virtuosity, LaBrie’s voice, and that sense of melody became a compass. He studied electric guitar with Javier Madrid and voice with Mariana Cabot, later Popular Singing at IUDEM with Biella Da Costa. At eighteen he graduated from the TAO Professional Kung Fu School (Mi Zong Lohan) under Sifu Tony Orsini.
Caracas trained him onstage. At nineteen he sang and wrote lyrics for Terra Nullius. At twenty he founded Fate’s Pride, a progressive-metal project that recorded the EP Alpha — including Hostage Life and Les Invalides — and appeared on international compilations such as Honor Thy Drummer. He played Hard Rock Café Caracas, the Auditorio de Bellas Artes, and the Concha Acústica at Parque del Este. He joined the vocal roster of the Simón Bolívar Conservatory’s Symphonic Rock Orchestra and toured stages in Venezuela and Colombia. On YouTube, his acoustic Dream Theater versions led to a collaboration with Thiago Campos and musicians from Brazil and South Korea on the split-screen cover of Fatal Tragedy.
In 2014 he left Venezuela and crossed the Gran Sabana and the Amazon. He settled in Brasília from 2015 to 2018, playing with AeroHits, VRA!, Andanza, and Progified, and recording vocals, guitar, and choral arrangements on The Gift of Music. He continued Shaolin Kung Fu under master Uelber Alves and competed in Brazilian traditional taolu championships. Then came the south: Praia do Rosa, Foz do Iguaçu, Montevideo, Punta del Este, Rocha, and Cabo Polonio, where life slowed down, closer to the sea and to nature, playing in hostels, inns, and bars through many summer nights.
He returned to Brasília to stay with what had become the center: music and Kung Fu. He rejoined VRA! — including the DVD Live at UK Music Hall — became a teacher at VRA Music Lab, recorded an acoustic-electric guitar duel of Jaws of Life with Progified, and sang on Tryptamax’s Strange with Will Shaw. With Sarene Music he plays restaurants across the city in a solo acoustic format, blending international pop/rock and Latin music.
In Brasília, his work has included musical direction for Petzold 1981 events, with productions at the National Theater and the National Stadium. Today he works from Blue Dragon Studio, his home space, producing Sesiones Caseras — pop, rock, and folk versions for YouTube — and building an original album that holds folk guitar and progressive rock in the same breath. Music and movement. Art and discipline. The same thread that began in the mountains of Miranda.
